Mumbai Receives 200 mm Rainfall as Monsoon Arrives Earliest in 75 Years; IMD Issues Red Alert

Mumbai witnessed over 200 mm of rainfall in several areas between midnight Sunday and Monday afternoon, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its forecast to a Red Alert.

Just two days after the southwest monsoon reached Kerala ahead of schedule, it made an unusually early entry into Mumbai on Monday — the earliest recorded in at least the past 75 years.

With heavy downpours lashing parts of the city, the IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai and the neighboring districts of Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, warning of intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Light to moderate showers over the weekend intensified into heavy rain by Sunday night. Continuous rainfall through Monday disrupted suburban train services and road traffic, with waterlogging reported in multiple areas of the city. Metro operations on one line were suspended after an underground station was flooded.
