Punjab Shuts All Educational Institutions Till September 7 Amid Flood Crisis
Chandigarh: The Punjab government has announced the closure of all educational institutions—including schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes—across the state until September 7, 2025, due to the worsening flood situation.
The decision was taken after heavy monsoon rains and the release of excess water from dams caused severe flooding in several districts. Thousands of acres of farmland have been submerged, over 1,400 villages are reported to be waterlogged, and relief operations are ongoing. Officials confirmed that more than 30 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents so far.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains issued clear instructions that no private or government school should call staff for duty during the closure, warning of strict action against violators. The order applies uniformly to government, aided, and private institutions across all 23 districts of Punjab.
Initially, schools were ordered shut from August 27 to August 30, later extended to September 3. With no significant improvement in water levels and continued heavy rainfall in some regions, the closure has now been pushed to September 7.
The state government has assured that steps are being taken to ensure the safety of students and teachers, while relief and rehabilitation efforts continue in the worst-hit areas. Authorities have urged parents and students to stay safe and avoid venturing into flood-affected zones.
